The house and its 3-acre gardens are set in the middle of a 180 acres of farmland, so you are guaranteed peace and tranquillity. An indoor swimming pool, along with a games room and tennis court provide plenty of activity for all ages. Meanwhile, our large garden room (complete with fruiting grape vine), antique dining room and 30 x 30 ft living room with wood-burning stove make the house a luxurious, comfortable setting for large gatherings. Cooking is a joy in our large, country-style kitchen which boasts an Aga and Belfast sink, whilst our well-proportioned bedrooms, fine artwork and antique furniture create the ideal atmosphere for a relaxing holiday. The sleeping accommodation is spread throughout the main, historic part of the house, a swimming pool annex and separate bunkhouse with its own kitchenette and dining area. Please see the gallery below for floor plans and our FAQ page for further information.
Old Great Marlborough has been restored by our family over many years, using largely recycled materials salvaged from redundant buildings or sites. The stone for our walls, slate for our roof and much of our flooring came from a coal mine. Other features were sourced from an old school gymnasium, a monastery and an abandoned factory, to name but a few. Perhaps our most popular ‘upcycled’ features are the two bespoke emperor beds that were assembled from the original timbers of the house. More recently we have installed solar panels to both heat our water and provide our electricity – taking advantage of the aptly named Golden Valley sunshine.
In a Welsh Country Garden… Fruit, Flowers and Lots of Fun
In the OGM garden there is almost always something to pick and eat. Our two apple and pear orchards produce a huge variety of fruits in the autumn, along with plums, damsons and blackberries which our guests are very welcome to pick and eat. Meanwhile, the mature gardens and lawns at OGM feature a beautiful array of trees, shrubs and flowers. Alongside traditional favourites, such as a stunning collection of roses, the garden is also home to more unusual plants such as lilac hibiscus and a beautiful pink bougainvillea, as well as a variety of specimen Acers to provide some all-important autumn colour.
The grounds of OGM host a tennis court with viewing pavilion, a sunken garden, covered barbeque area (complete with lighting and power-points for great summer evening parties!) and many secluded seating areas. The gardens feature stunning views of the Black Mountains, Hay Bluff, the magical Skirrid Mountain, rolling farmland and – on a clear night – even as far as the Milky Way.
